Menswear Styling Inspiration

Menswear Styling to Try This Season.

When I think of male-style icons, people such as Jagger, Bowie, Prince and Yojimoto instantly come to mind. Although menswear has moved through many more fashion trend cycles since; there are lots of elements to retro fashion that can be mixed with today’s current trends.

CLASHING PRINT

As someone who aspires to design men's clothing for a living, I absolutely love it when I see someone finding a new way to mix patterns and prints (especially when there are multiple colours involved) it’s always so bold and refreshing. Gucci is a brand that has recently become well known for this kind of styling, a lot of their menswear campaign shoots utilise patterned knitwear, floral jackets and check trousers.

If you want to experiment with mixing prints, use a patterned piece such as a top or bottom but pair with plain clothing in a similar colourway. You can then add in a small printed accessory such as a tie, bag or hat. For the inspiration behind these looks, I would recommend researching late 60’s fashion, Y-project, Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten and Gucci campaigns. When done the right way it can look luxurious and expensive.

LAYERING KNITWEAR

Winter is approaching and layering is requisite. There is so much knitwear styling inspiration on Pinterest, I have gathered some of the most eye-catching looks taken mainly from streetwear photography, from celebrities or during fashion week.

The great thing about these kinds of outfits is that they are casual and can be worn every day of the season. Patterned cardigans underneath leather jackets or over plaid shirts are seen to be more favourable ways to style the pieces… or even knit on knit!

FLARED TROUSERS

Flares are my favourite trouser cut, they’re so timeless and versatile but can pull together any outfit with almost no effort and can appear to flatter most, if not all body types. When paired with a chunky belt, heeled boots and an oversized jacket it gives a simple 70’s rock n roll icon look.

They don’t have to be simple outfits, you can have a lot of fun with monochromatic pairing and accessorising. The flared bottom allows you to be much more diverse when it comes to selecting footwear as opposed to a skin-tight or baggy bottoms choice.
